The Great Believers

Updated: Jul 12, 2023

A story with incredible emotional depth, nuanced and well developed characters, the complicated relationships between them, and all set against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic that forces a group of young men to grapple with unimaginable fear and loss. What could possibly make this story even more complete? Interestingly, Rebecca Makkai's answer would be a randomly interposed plot line that cuts to present-day Paris and highlights a mother's quest to free her daughter from a cult. While also reconnecting with the 1920s art world.
